Core Aims

Walk Alongside

No one should have to grieve alone. Abba’s Child seeks to break the isolation often experienced with peers at home.

Cherish Memories

Memories become the treasure that remains after a loved one dies. Celebrations of cherished memories encourages healing.

Energize Hope

Hope is energized when grieving families interact with others who are successfully navigating the journey of sadness and loss.

Remember to Live

Camp allows kids to laugh, cry, play, create, remember the person who died, and acknowledge the feelings that weigh them down. It is all part of living.

Encourage New Life

Over time we release the pain of loss, but never the power of legacy. Our lives pay tribute to the loved ones we have lost.

WHAT DO YOU DO? DELIVER THE “WOW”

Our support team provides the zest that makes Abba’s Child extra special. You deliver the “Wow.” And as Abba’s Child grows, so does the need for a great team.

We require all camp staff and volunteers to support our culture and goals with compassion and enthusiasm. Further for camper safety, all volunteers must provide information for a background check and attend a staff/volunteer training prior to the event or camp. This will help you better understand childhood bereavement and our team’s expectations.

Team Tasks

Healing Facilitators

(2-3 needed per camp or retreat)

Licensed mental health professionals with experience facilitating support groups, working with children, and addressing grief issues are needed to lead our camps and Retreats. Each day during a camp or retreat our healing facilitators lead age-based grief support activities that aid in the healing process. Healing facilitators will guide these activities and participate in other camp and retreat activities to aid in building relationships.

Setup Squad

(1-3 NEEDED PER CAMP/Retreat)

The Setup Squad is responsible for helping to get things ready for each camp and retreat. Communicating with families, collecting forms, making nametags, creating signage, maybe even providing a welcome gift! Whatever it takes to make arrival at camp a special experience. Once camp is underway the Setup Squad will help to make the Healing Facilitators successful with their activities and provide a few special camper treats along the way for good measure. You are the “WOW!”

Medical Team

(2 NEEDED PER RETREAT)

Two camp nurses or doctors are needed on-site for the entire weekend retreat to assist with any medical needs and provide support to our families. Camp Nurses must be available during camper registration to meet the families and inquire about any special medical concerns.

Story Catchers

(1-3 NEEDED PER CAMP or Retreat)

The Camp Photographer takes professional quality, candid pictures throughout the weekend as well as posed photos for each camper and family to take home. The Videographer is expected to capture video footage and strategic interview footage with the goal of creating promotional and memory videos of Abba’s Child events. The Camp reporter travels with the team taking notes about what is happening and creating stories to share online and with parents. All story catchers are responsible for bringing their own equipment. Note: all content created by the Story Catchers shall be the property of Abba’s Child Grief Camps.

Screen Team – Professional Therapists and Social Workers

The Screen Team assists Abba’s Child Administration to carry out phone interviews with parents and guardians of campers. These phone interviews determine if Abba’s Child is a good fit for the children or families at the time. A professional mental health background is required for all screeners.

Ambassadors

(Needed in each area)
